encomienda system a Spanish colonial labor system where the crown granted settlers the right to indigenous labor and tribute in exchange for protection. It was brutal, forced labor that fueled Spanish wealth but caused massive indigenous population decline.
indentured servant laborers who contracted to work in colonial America in exchange for transatlantic passage, room, and board. They were essential to filling early labor shortages and facilitated rapid settlement.
Puritans 16th-17th century English Protestants who sought to "purify" the Church of England of Catholic rituals, emphasizing strict morality, and covenant theology. They significantly shaped New England's religious, social, and political development.
