ES Hormones

Pituitary Gland In the Hypothalamus, it controls all the other glands.
Prolactin or PRL Stimulates Milk Production
Growth Hormone or GH Stimulates growth, important for maintaining muscle mass and bone mass
Adrenocorticotropin or ACTH Stimulates production of Hormones
Thyroid Stimulating Hormones or TSH Regulates production of metabolism, energy, growth, and development
Luteinizing Hormone or LH Regulates testosterone or Estrogen
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone or FSH Promotes sperm production or ovaries egg release
Oxytocin Causes milk letdown in nursing mothers & contractions during childbirth
Antidiuretic Hormone or ADH Regulates water balance; stored in back of pituitary gland.
Thyroid Gland Controls metabolism and production of T3 and T4
Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3) Increases rate at which cells release energy from carbohydrates
Calcitonin Regulates blood concentration of Calcium
Parathyroid Gland Located behind thyroid
Parathyroid Hormone or PTH Take calcium from the bones to make it available in the blood
Adrenal glands Located above EACH kidney
Epinephrine Increases heart rate, breathing rate, elevates blood pressure "fight or flight" response
Aldosterone Helps Kidneys conserve sodium and excrete potassium, maintaining blood pressure
Cortisol Keeps blood glucose levels stable, response to stress.
Pancrease A large gland behind the stomach that maintains glucose levels
Glucagon Stimulates the liver to break down glycogen, raises blood sugar
Insulin Decreases blood sugar concentrations, affects the uptake of glucose by cells
Diabetes Type 1 Juvenile onset diabetes, often caused by immune disorders that destroy pancreatic cells
Diabetes Type 2 Mature onset diabetes, often individuals are overweight, may be controlled with a diet.
Hypoglycemia An excess of blood sugar
Diabetes Insipidus Uncommon condition that occurs when kidneys are unable to save water
Diabetes Neuropathy A deviled version of diabetes that has taken affect through the nervous system
Pineal Gland Secretes melatonin which maintains circadian rhythms in the center of the brain
Thymus Gland Large in young children, gradually shrinks with age, secretes thymosins, important to maintain function, located above the heart.
Testes and Ovaries Produce Gonadotropins, such as testosterone, progesterone, estrogen
