| detached house | not joined to any other house |
| terraced house | joined to several houses to form a row |
| bungalow | a house with only one storey (no upstairs) |
| semi-detached house | joined to one other house |
| self-contained flat | does not share facilities with any other |
| cottage | a small house in the country or in a village |
| studio flat | a small apartment for one or two people, usually with one large room for sleeping and living in, a bathroom and sometimes a separate kitchen |
| villa | a large house with big gardens or a rented house in a holiday resort/tourist area |
| master/main bedroom | the largest, most important bedroom |
| utility room | usually just for the washing machine, freezer, etc. |
| shed | small building separated from the house usually for storing garden tools |
| attic/loft | space in the roof of a house used for storing things; it can also be converted into an extra living space with stairs leading up to it (attic/loft conversion) |
| cellar | room below ground level, no windows, used for storing things |
| basement | room below ground level, with windows, for living/working |
| studio | a room in which a painter or photographer works |
| landing | flat area at the top of a staircase |
| hall/hallway | open area as you come into a house |
| porch | covered area before an entrance door |
| terrace or patio | paved area between house and garden for sitting and eating, etc. |
| drive | a short road leading from the street to the house or garage; you can drive/park on it |
| remote control | device to control appliances from a distance |
| corkscrew | tool for pulling corks from bottles |
| chopping board | board for cutting food on |
| coat hanger | object for hanging clothes on |
| ironing board | flat board for ironing clothes on |
| table mat | protective mat placed under plates or dishes |
| socket | electrical outlet |
| do housework/do the ironing/do the hoovering/do the washing-up | NOT make housework |
| home | the place where people feel comfortable and safe |
| feel at home | feel comfortable somewhere |
| make yourself at home | relax and make yourself comfortable |
| as safe as houses | extremely safe |
| come home to me | I didn’t understand it fully until some days later (implications didn’t come home to me) |
| brought home to me | made me understand, usually something unpleasant |
| got my foot in the door | started working at a low level in an organisation because you want to get a better job in the same organisation later on |
| hold the key to | provide the explanation for something you could not previously understand |
| flew off the handle | reacted in a very angry way (informal) |
| sit on the fence | delay making a decision or fail to choose between two alternatives |
| come down on one side | make a choice (after sitting on the fence) |
| hit the ceiling/roof | reacted angrily |
| got out of bed on the wrong side | got up in a bad mood and stayed in a bad mood all day |
| burning the candle at both ends | staying up late and getting up early |
| put me in the picture | explained the situation to me |
| get the picture | understand the situation (informal) |
| keep someone in the picture | keep someone informed |
| take a leaf out of his girlfriend’s book | copy something someone else does, often in order to gain an advantage that they have |
