Federalism

TermDefinition
Federalism The form of government where power is shared between the national government and the state governments.
Reserved Powers Powers reserved for the states
Concurrent Powers Powers that the national and state governments share
Enumerated/Delegated Powers Powers that belong to the national government.
Coin money, set up a postal system, declare war, regulate foreign commerce, negotiate treaties. Examples of enumerated powers
Guarantee civil rights, collect taxes, provide for public safety, protect public health, establish courts, punish lawbreakers, borrow money, construct and maintain roads. Examples of concurrent powers
Conduct elections, establish local governments, establish schools, regulate marriage, divorce, and adoption, regulate intrastate commerce, provide fire and police protection, enact license requirements. Examples of Reserved powers
Gerrymandering the drawing of a legislative district with the intent of giving one party/group a significant advantage.
Florida Declaration of rights a list of 27 rights that Florida guarantees to its citizens, found in Article I of the Florida Constitution.
County seat the town or city that a county government in based in.

Redistricting the process of redrawing the geographic boundaries of legislative districts after a census.
Apportionment the distribution of seats in a legislature according to the population of each state.
