6th Grade WWII

QuestionAnswer
What did Adolf Hitler do after WWI? Adolf Hitler believed Germany had been treated unfairly after World War I and he began rallying Germans to respond with their military. He began moving Germany’s army into neighboring countries. He broke the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
What did Hitler want? To have control of Europe. He convinced the German people Germany had a right to rule because they were superior people.
What did Hitler try to convince people of? He also convinced them that some people did not deserve to live–like Jewish people, Romas (sometimes called Gypsies), those with physical or mental disabilities or differences. These people were persecuted in Germany and in countries Germany took over.
Who suffered the most under Hitler? Jewish people suffered the most under the Nazis. 6 million were killed.
What were the two sides of WWII? Axis: Germany, Italy, Japan and their allies Allies: Britain, France, Soviet Union, the US, China and their allies
What did Japan want? Like Hitler, who wanted more land in Europe, Japanese wanted more land in Asia and the Pacific. Two years before World War II began, Japan invaded China.
What did the US do? The US tried to stay out of the war initially. The U.S. joined in 1941 after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The very next day, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on Japan’s allies, too.
Did any countries remain neutral? If so, which countries? Some countries did remain neutral: Spain, Switzerland, Vatican City, and Sweden did not join either side but helped quietly with aid or advice.
What was D-Day? Allied forces landed in northern France in an effort to free France from Nazi control, and then to free Europe. They landed on beaches in Normandy. The Allies were successful, and the war turned in the Allies’ favor.
When did Germany surrender? Germany surrendered in May 1945.
Did Japan surrender when Germany did? Japan did not surrender when Germany did. The U.S. dropped atomic bombs on two Japanese cities, completely destroying them and killing hundreds of thousands of people. Japan surrendered afterward, in August 1945.
How many people died in WWII? At least 64 million people died in World War II. So many died, from so many different places, that it is likely a higher number than that. (That is more than the entire population of Britain!) More civilians died than soldiers in this war.
What was a Cold War? A Cold War began–a time where there was not a world war, but where powerful countries tried to get influence in other countries.
Blitzkrieg ”Lightning War”
Luftwaffe German Air Force
RAF Royal Air Force (British)
Final Solution Nazi plan to kill all Jewish people
D-Day day Allies invaded Normandy France, to free it from Germans and take back Europe
