QuestionAnswer
What was the political environment like in Europe after WWII? Half of Europe was democratic (citizens had say in the way country was run; citizens voted and had expanded rights) and half was communist (government owned everything; limited citizen rights)
What was the Cold War? The “Cold War” is this period of democracy and communism struggling to be the more powerful. (1945-1989)
What happened during the Cold War? The Soviet Union was communist and at odds with western Europe and the U.S. The U.S. and the Soviet Union didn’t trust each other. Espionage increased (spies)
What was the European Union (EU)? After WWII European nations began forming treaties and economic agreements to make sure they never go to war against each other again. Helps for trade, travel, law-making, and peace-keeping easier between them. They have one currency.
What was BREXIT? The EU was shaken in 2020 when Britain voted to leave the EU in a move called Brexit
What is the motto of the European Union? United in Diversity - it was formed for economic growth in Europe, understanding, decreased chance of aggression.
