Intro to Therm & Potential Energy Diagrams
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| enthalpy | the energy stored in a substance |
| work | the ability to cause motion or produce heat |
| heat of reaction (enthalpy change) | the energy change that occurs during a reaction; the difference between the PE of the reactants and the products |
| endothermic reaction | a process in which energy is absorbed from the surroundings into the system and results in a decrease in temperature |
| exothermic reaction | a process in which energy is released into the surroundings from the system and results in an increase in temperature |
| thermochemistry | the study of energy changes in a chemical reaction |
| catalyst | a substance used during a reaction to lower the activation energy needed to cause the reaction to occur |
| kinetic-molecular theory | all atoms are in constant motion |
| thermal energy | kinetic energy of atoms; heat energy |
| activation energy | the energy required to convert reactants into an activated complex |
| temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy |
| heat | KE transferred between two substances because of a difference in temperature |
| activated complex | temporary high energy state of elements after the bonds of the reactants are broken |
| chemical energy | potential energy that is stored in the bonds of compounds |
