| Benito Mussolini | — The leader of Italy before and during World War II who used strict control and strong military power to rule his country; he helped start the Axis group of countries. |
| Adolf Hitler | — The leader of Germany during World War II who led the Nazi Party, used harmful propaganda, and started the war by invading other countries. |
| blitzkrieg | — A German word meaning “lightning war”; a fast, powerful style of attack using tanks, airplanes, and soldiers that aimed to defeat enemies quickly. |
| infamy | — Being very famous for something bad or shocking; a deed or event that people remember because it was terrible. |
| Hideki Tojo | — The military leader and prime minister of Japan during much of World War II who helped plan and carry out Japan’s wartime actions. |
| Lend-Lease Act | — A U.S. law that allowed America to send weapons and supplies to help Allied countries during World War II without requiring immediate payment. |
| Neville Chamberlain | — The British prime minister who used appeasement toward Hitler before World War II and is known for trying to avoid another large war. |
| Pearl Harbor | — A U.S. naval base in Hawaii that was attacked by Japan on December 7, 1941; the surprise attack led the United States to enter World War II. |
