AP Psych Unit 1 Brain

neuroplasticity the brain's ability to change; higher during childhood
hindbrain directs essential survival functions (breathing, sleeping), coordination, and balance
medulla function controls heartbeat and breath

cerebellum coordinate movement and balance, and enables learning and memory
midbrain controls some motor movement, transmits auditory and visual information
forebrain manages complex cognitive activities, sensory and associative functions, and voluntary motor activities
cerebral cortex intricate fabric of interconnected cells
cerebral cortex function control and processing center
thalamus directs messages to sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to cerebellum and medulla
hypothalamus directs maintenance activities (eating, body temperature), governs endocrine system, and linked to emotion and reward
reticular formation nerve network that filters information and controls arousal
limbic system associated with emotions and drives
amygdala two bean sized neural clusters linked to emotion
hippocampus neural center that processes conscious memories of facts and events into storage
frontal lobes enable linguistic processing, muscle movements, higher-order thinking, and executive functioning
parietal lobes receive sensory input for touch and position
motor cortex controls voluntary movements
somatosensory cortex registers body touch, movement sensations
corpus callosum large band of neural fibers carrying messages between two brain hemispheres
