Ecological Relations

| biotic factors | the parts of a habitat that are living and interact with organisms |
| abiotic factors | all the non-living parts of an organism's environment |
| population | all the members of one species living in a particular area |
| community | all the different populations that live together in an area |
| ecosystem | the community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with the non-living things |
| biome | a large geographical area of distinctive plant and animal groups, which are adapted to that particular environment |
| biosphere | consists of all life on Earth and all parts of the Earth in which life exists, including land, water, and the atmosphere |
| competition | the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resources |
| limiting factor | a resource or environmental condition which limits the growth, distribution, or abundance of an organism or population within an ecosystem |
| population density | the number of individuals in an area of a particular size |
| carrying capacity | largest number of individuals of a species that an environment can support |
| extinction | when all member of a species have died off |
| endangered species | a species whose numbers are so small that the species is at risk of extinction |
| migration | the instinctive seasonal movement of a population of organisms from one place to another |
| habitat | the place where an organism lives that provides the needed resources to live, grow, and reproduce |
| niche | the role of an organism in its habitat |
| producers | an organism that can make its own food |
| consumers | an organism that obtains its energy by feeding on other organisms |
| predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food |
| symbiosis | any relationship in which two species live closely together and that benefits at least one of the species |
| mutualism | a type of symbiosis in which both species benefit from living together |
| commensalism | a type of symbiosis between two species in which one species benefits and the other species is neither helped nor harmed |
| parasitism | a type pf symbiosis in which one organism lives with, in, or on a host and harms it |
| parasite | an organism that benefits from living with, on, or in a host in a parasitism interaction |
| host | the organism that the parasite lives on or in and provides a source of energy or a suitable environment for the parasite to live |
