QuestionAnswer
allele One of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome.
dominant allele An allele that produces the same phenotype whether its paired allele is identical or different; it "masks" the expression of a recessive allele.
genetics The scientific study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms
genotype The genetic constitution of an individual organism (e. g., (AA),(Aa), or (aa)
heterozygote An individual having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes (e.g., Aa).
homozygote An individual having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes (e.g., AA or aa).
hybrid An offspring resulting from the cross of two genetically different parents or varieties.
law of independent assortment Mendel's law stating that genes for different traits are inherited independently of each other during gamete formation.
law of segregation Mendel's law stating that the two alleles for a trait separate during meiosis, so each gamete receives only one allele.
locus The specific physical location or position of a gene or DNA sequence on a chromosome.
phenotype The observable physical characteristics or traits of an organism, determined by its genotype and environment.
pollen Fine powder containing the male gametes (sperm cells) of seed-producing plants.
pollinations The transfer of pollen from the male part of a plant (anther) to the female part (stigma).
recessive allele An allele that is only expressed in the phenotype when two copies are present (homozygous).
codominance A condition in which both alleles for a gene are fully and equally expressed in the phenotype of the heterozygote (e.g., a cow with both red and white hairs).
incomplete dominance A pattern of inheritance where the phenotype of a heterozygote is an intermediate blend between the two homozygous phenotypes (e.g., red and white flowers producing pink offspring).
polygenic characteristic A trait that is controlled by the interaction of multiple genes, often resulting in a wide range of phenotypes (e.g., human skin color or height).
probability The mathematical likelihood that a specific event or outcome will occur, used in genetics to predict the chances of offspring inheriting certain traits.
Punnett square A grid or diagram used to predict the possible genotypes and phenotypes of offspring from a particular genetic cross.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
