| anaphylactic shock | respiratory system swells to such extent that air is prevented from entering lungs |
| cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) | the American Red Cross and the American heart association (AHA) |
| closed fracture | broken bone that does not break the skin |
| external bleeding | blood drains to the outside of the body through a break in the skin |
| first aid | refers to providing emergency care to an accident injured or to someone who has suddenly become ill |
| frost bite | Symptoms progress from cold, red skin (frostnip) to white, hard, numb skin (superficial frostbite), and finally to black, blistered skin (severe frostbite). Immediate treatment involves gentle rewarming in warm water |

| good Samaritan act | This is a law that protects individuals from liability when they stop to assist someone who has been hurt or is ill. |
