TheLymphaticSystem
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Lymph | The name for interstitial fluid once it has entered the lymphatic capillaries |
| Lymphatic Capillaries | The smallest, closed-ended vessels that form networks in intercellular spaces; they have porous junctions to allow fluid and proteins to enter |
| Lymph Ducts | Larger vessels formed by the merging of capillaries; they contain valves to prevent backflow and use peristaltic contractions to move fluid |
| Lymph Nodes | Structures that act as filters for lymph; they contain phagocytic cells to remove pathogens and germinal centers for lymphocyte production |
| Lymphocytes | A type of white blood cell produced in lymphoid tissues (like the thymus and spleen) that provides immunological defense against disease |
| Interstitial Fluid | The fluid that surrounds cells; the lymphatic system absorbs the excess and returns it to the bloodstream |
| Thoracic & Right Lymphatic Ducts | The two main ducts where lymph collected from the body eventually empties before returning to the subclavian veins |
