Planet Vocabulary

| orbit | the path an object takes as it moves around another object in space |
| inner planets | the four planets that are closest to the Sun-Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars |
| outer planets | the four planets farthest from the Sun-Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune |
| terrestrial planets | rocky planets with solid surfaces |
| gas giant | a large planet made mostly of gases like hydrogen and helium |
| ice giant | a planet composed mainly of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, like water and ammonia |
| rotation | the spinning of a planet on its axis |
| revolution | the movement of a planet around the Sun |
| axis | an imaginary line through a planet from pole to pole |
| day | the time it takes for a planet to complete one rotation |
| year | the time it takes for a planet to orbit the Sun |
| moon | a natural satellite that orbits a planet |
| Kuiper Belt | a region beyond Neptune filled with icy objects |
| Asteroid Bell | A region between Mars and Jupiter with many asteroids |
| habitable zone | the region around a star where conditions may support life |
| magnetic field | an invisible field around a planet that protects it from solar radiation |
| ring system | rings of dust and particles around a planet |
| eclipse | when one space object blocks another |
| solar eclipse | when the Moon blocks the Sun |
| Lunar Eclipse | when Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the Moon |
| escape velocity | the speed needed to break free from a planet's gravity |
| orbit period | time it takes to complete one orbit |
| albedo | how much light a planet reflects |
| radiation | energy traveling through space in waves or particles |
