| What are the four quadrants of the abdomen? | Left upper, left lower, right upper, right lower |
| What are the symptoms you're assessing the abdomen for? | Tenderness, rigidity, swelling, guarding and distension |
| What is it called if a patient contracts their abdomen when you are assessing it? | Guarding |
| What is a hematoma? | It is blood leaking from a larger damaged blood vessel. Looks similar to a bruise, but is raised firm and painful. |
| What quadrant is the liver in? What does it do? | RUQ - Filters and detoxifies blood. Produces bile and store energy. |
| What quadrants are the kidneys in? What do they do? | All of them/Bilateral flanks - Filters blood and produces urine |
| What quadrant is the stomach in? What does it do? | LUQ - Secretes acid, performs the mechanical and chemical digestion of food |
| What quadrant is the bladder in? What does it do? | RLQ, LLQ - Stores urine |
| What quadrant is the gallbladder in? What does it do? | RUQ - Stores bile and releases it during digestion |

| Where is the pancreas? What does it do? | RUQ, LUQ - Secretes digestive enzymes and regulates blood sugar. |
| Where is the spleen? What does it do? | LUQ - Stores and filters blood |
| What is trismus? What can it be a sign of? | Condition in which the patient's teeth are clenched closed. Seizure, severe head injury or cerebral hypoxia. Do not try to open the mouth and con sider an NPA to manage the airway. |
| What must you consider when alcohol is involved with a patient? | Alcohol can mask other signs and symptoms, it can also be mistaken for diabetics. |
| Where is the small intestine? What does it do? | Intraperitoneal, LLQ, RLQ - Absorption of nutrients during digestion |
| Where is the large intestine? What does it do? | Intraperitoneal, surrounding the small intestine - Absorbs water |
| What is peritonitis? What can cause it? | Inflammation of the lining in the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) which is a life threatening infection. It can be caused by hollow organs being damaged and leaking their contents. |
