solar system The Sun and everything that orbits it
heliocentric A model where the Sun is at the center of the solar system.
geocentric A model where Earth is at the center of the solar system.
parallax The apparent shift in position of an object when viewed from different locations.
gravity The force that pulls objects toward each other.
orbit The path an object follows around another object in space.
aphelion The point in an orbit where an object is farthest from the Sun.
perihelion The point in an orbit where an object is closest to the Sun.
centripetal force The force that keeps an object moving in a curved path
solar nebula A cloud of gas and dust that formed the solar system.
Planetesimal A small body of rock or ice that can come together to form planets.
Nuclear fusion The process in the Sun where atoms combine to release energy.
Sunspot A cooler, darker area on the Sun’s surface.
Solar flare sudden burst of energy from the Sun.
Prominence A large, glowing loop of gas extending from the Sun.
Terrestrial planet A small, rocky planet
Astronomical unit The average distance from Earth to the Sun.
Gas giant A large planet made mostly of gas (like Jupiter or Saturn).
Planetary ring Rings of dust, rock, and ice that orbit a planet.
Dwarf planet A small planet that orbits the Sun but hasn’t cleared its orbit.
Kuiper Belt A region beyond Neptune filled with icy objects.
Kuiper Belt object Any object found in the Kuiper Belt.
Comet A ball of ice and dust that forms a glowing tail near the Sun.
Oort cloud A distant cloud of icy objects surrounding the solar system.
Asteroid A rocky object orbiting the Sun, mostly found between Mars and Jupiter.
Meteoroid A small piece of rock in space.
Meteor A meteoroid burning in Earth’s atmosphere
Meteorite A meteoroid that reaches Earth’s surface.
