| Term | Definition |

| ROOT | Basic meaning of a term. Medical terms can have multiple roots. |
| COMBINING VOWEL | Adds a root to a root, or a suffix to a suffix. EX: Electr/o/cardi/o/gram- O is the combining vowel |
| SUFFIX | Adds add'l meaning to the end of a term. EX: Electrocardiogram- Gram is the suffix If the suffix begins with a vowel,do not use a combining vowel. EX: hepat(i)tis, gastr(a)lgia, dermat(i)tis, gastr(i)tis, arthr(i)tis |
