territorial sea A belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles from the baseline of a coastal state.
irredentism Any position advocating annexation of territories administered by another state on the grounds of common ethnicity or prior historical possession, actually or alleged
gerrymandering The process of redrawing legislative boundaries for the purpose of benefiting the party in power.
ethnic cleansing A purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent and terror-inspiring means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group from certain geographic areas.
sovereignty Ability of a state to govern its territory free from control of its internal affairs by other states.
multinational state A state that contains two or more ethnic groups with traditions of self-determination that agree to coexist peacefully by recognizing each other as distinct nationalities.
centripetal force Unifying factors that bring people together in a state.
stateless nation Cultural groups that have no independent political entity.
subsequent boundaries A boundary created after settlement, usually meant to separate existing cultural groups.
antecedent boundaries A boundary created before an area is known or populated.
definitional boundary disputes A disagreement over the location or demarcation of a border between two or more countries, states, or other political or geographic entities or the focus on the legal language of the boundary agreement.
exclave A portion of a state or district geographically separated from the main part by surrounding alien territory (of one or more states or districts etc). Example: Llivia is a portion of Spain that is surrounded by France.
centrifugal force Factors that may cause a state to break up.
redistricting The redrawing of congressional and other legislative district lines following the census, to accommodate population shifts and keep districts as equal as possible in population.
geometric boundaries Creating boundaries in straight lines or based on lines of latitude and longitude. The 38th parallel in the Korean Peninsula is a good example of this.
reapportionment The process by which seats in the United States House of Representatives are distributed among the 50 states according to the most recent decennial census mandated by the United States Constitution.
genocide The mass killing of a group of people in an attempt to eliminate the entire group from existence.
multiethnic state A state that contains more than one ethnicity.
enclave A territory (or a small territory as part of a larger one) that is entirely surrounded by the territory of one other state or entity. Example: The Vatican City within the city of Rome.
supranational organization Three or more countries agree to give up a degree of autonomy in order to pursue common goals. (ex. European Union)
UNCLOS An international agreement that establishes a legal framework for all marine and maritime activities.
european union A supranational political and economic union of 27 member states that are located primarily in Europe.
devolution The process in which power moves from the central government to subnational units
