Cotton is King / King Cotton Cotton was the South’s most important crop and depended on slavery.
Nat Turner’s Rebellion A slave revolt in 1831 led by Nat Turner against slave owners.
Amistad Case Court case where enslaved Africans won freedom after taking over a ship.
American Colonization Society A group that wanted to send free Black Americans back to Africa (especially Liberia).
American Anti-Slavery Society An organization that worked to end slavery in the United States.
The Liberator An anti-slavery newspaper started by William Lloyd Garrison.
Walker’s Appeal A pamphlet by David Walker that strongly spoke out against slavery and encouraged enslaved people to resist.
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass A book written by Frederick Douglass about his life as a slave and his escape to freedom.
Gag Resolution A rule in Congress that stopped people from talking about or debating slavery.
