| Context clues | information around the word that helps you guess the meaning |
| Headings | title of a section or page |
| Keyword | important words that are related the the main topic |
| Look up a word | find the definition in a dictionary or online |
| Main idea | gist or the main point of a reading or discussion |
| Paragraph | a piece of writing usually with a single topic and begins with an indent |
| Passage | short extract or part of a book or longer reading |
| Scan | to look through a reading for specific information quickly |
| Skim | read quickly to look for the main idea |
| Strategy | tool or technique or plan used to achieve a goal |
| Talk to the text | annotate, write in the margins, circle unknown words and underline or highlight key ideas |
| Titles | names of pieces of writing, art, songs and movies |
| Topic | focus in one word or two |
| Topic sentence | a main idea sentence often at the beginning of a paragraph that mentions the topic and how it will be discussed in the paragraph |
