TermDefinition
Define a physical property. A physical property is a characteristic of matter that can be observed, measured, or detected without changing the substance's chemical identity
Define a chemical property. Chemical properties are characteristics of a substance that become evident only during or after a chemical reaction, altering its molecular identity.
Define a physical change. A physical change is a alteration to a substance's state, shape, or appearance without changing its molecular composition or creating a new substance.
Define a chemical change. A chemical change occurs when substances are transformed into new materials with entirely different properties, involving the breaking and forming of chemical bonds.
Describe the change in mass of our bath bomb and water reaction in a closed system. The mass remained the same throughout the reaction.
What equipment is needed in order to measure the density of a rock. Graduated cylinder and a triple-beam balance.
What equipment is needed in order to measure the density of a metal cube. Metric ruler and a triple-beam balance.
What do graduated cylinders measure? volume
What do balance scales measure? mass
What is a reactant in a chemical reaction? The substances that react with each other; left side of the arrow on a chemical equation
What are the reactants of our bath bomb and water chemical reaction? Water, baking soda, citric acid
What is a product in a chemical reaction? The substances that are produced during a chemical reaction; right side of the arrow in a chemical equation
What is the product that is a gas in our bath bomb and water chemical reaction? Water, carbon dioxide, sodium citrate
hydrogen gas particles single atoms or in groups of two atoms? Groups of two atoms
Are oxygen gas particles single atoms or in groups of two atoms? Groups of two atoms
What is the molecular formula for water? H2O
Write out the balanced chemical reaction for hydrogen and oxygen gas making water. 2H2 + O2 → 2H2O 2h2 + O2 -> 2H2O is also an acceptable way to type it out

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
