John Locke Believed people are born with natural rights (life, liberty, property). Government gets power from the people and can be overthrown if it fails to protect those rights.
Voltaire Supported freedom of speech and religion. Believed in tolerance, even for ideas you disagree with.
Baron de Montesquieu Believed government power should be divided into branches (separation of powers) with checks and balances to prevent abuse.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau Believed in the social contract where people give up some freedom for protection. Government should follow the “general will” (majority rule).
Thomas Hobbes Believed people need a strong government (Leviathan) to avoid chaos. People give up freedoms for safety under an absolute ruler.
Mary Wollstonecraft Early feminist who argued women should have equal rights, including education, property ownership, voting, and divorce rights.
