Chem #13

QuestionAnswer
What are the properties of an acid? Taste sour, strong or weak electrolytes, react with base to form salt and water, react with metals to produce hydrogen gas, time litmus red, low pH (0-7).
What are the properties of a base? Taste bitter, strong or weak electrolytes, react with acids to form water and salt, feel slimy to the touch, turn litmus blue, high pH value (7-14).
What is the Arrhenius theory? An acid contains the element hydrogen and a base contains hydroxide ions.
What is the Bronsted Lowry theory? Says an acid donates hydrogen and a base accepts hydrogen (acid: proton donor and base: proton acceptor) (Is the one that is conjugate acid and base)
What is it called if a substance is both an acid and base? Amphoteric. (It can either donor or accept hydrogen ions)
What is the product of a hydrogen and hydroxide ion? [H+] + [OH-] = 1*10^-14
What is a chemical dye that changes color based on the pH of the solution? An acid-base indicator.
What is the method for using a neutralization reaction to determine the concentration of a solution? Titration.
What is a reaction in which an acid and a base react to produce a salt and water? Neutralization.
What is a solution of known concentration called? Standard solution.
What is an ionic product of an acid-base titration called? Salt
What is the point in a titration in which an indicator changes color? End point.
How do you go from [H+] to pH? (Same for pOH and [OH-]) -log( H+)
How do you go from pH to [H+]? (Same for pOH and [OH-]) 10^-pH
What are the six strong acids? HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, HClO4, and H2SO4.
What are the six strong bases? NaOH, LiOH, Ca(OH)2, Ba(OH)2, Na2O, CaO

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
