| Term | Definition |

| simple interest | interest calculated only on the principal |
| compound interest | interest calculated on the principal and any previous interest earned |
| credit | the ability to make a purchase before payment assuming a payment will be made in the future |
| scholarship | a sum of money that is awarded on merit to help offset the costs of college |
| irrational numbers | can not be written as fractions, non-repeating and non-terminating decimals, and non perfect squares |
| rational numbers | can be written as fractions, repeating decimals, terminating decimals, and perfect squares |
| slope | ratio of the change in y-values over the change in x-values; "rise" over "run" |
| y intercept | the point where a line crosses the y-axis; the y value when the x is zero |
| variable | a letter that expresses a numerical value |
| positive slope | slope that increases from left to right |
| negative slope | slope that decreases from left to right |
| proportional | any graph that is both linear and contains the origin |
| hypotenuse | the longest side of the right triangle; opposite from the right angle; side c |
| legs | the sides of a right triangle that are adjacent to the right angle; sides a and b |
| dilation | a transformation that either enlarges or reduces the size of an original figure by a given scale factor |
