Spinal curvature

Abnormal spinal curvature (Kinds, complications,treatment)

Commonly seen during pregnancy as the woman adjusts to changes in her center of gravity. May be idiopathic, secondary to traumatic injury degenerative process of vertebral bodies Lordosis (Swayback)
increased roundedness of the thoracic curvature seen in elderly people with osteoporosis or chronic arthritis, those with neuromuscular disease or compression fractures of the thoracic vertebrae Kyphosis (Hunchback)
Abnormal side to side curvature can be idiopathic or a result of damage to the supporting muscles along the spine Scoliosis
Complications of abnormal spinal curvature interfere with normal breathing, posture, and other vital functions
What determines the various treatments instituted for abnormal spine curvature The degree of curvature and resulting deformity of the vertebral column
Treatment for scoliosis use of supportive "Milwaukee brace" worn on upper body for 23 ours per day for several years
What is transcutaneous simulation muscles on one side of the vertebral column are electrically stimulated to contract and pull the vertebrae into normal position
surgical intervention pieces of bone from elsewhere in the skeleton or metal rods are grafted to the deformed vertebrae to hold them in proper alignment
If treated early enough ------ from poor posture can be corrected with special exercise kyphosis
