| Solar System | The collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit around the sun, together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. |
| Heliocentric | A model of the solar system in which Earth and the other planets revolve around the sun. |
| Geocentric | A model of the universe in which Earth is at the center of the revolving planets and stars. |
| Parallax | The apparent change in position of an object when seen from different places. |
| Gravity | The force that pulls objects toward each other. |
| Orbit | The path of an object as it revolves around another object in space. |
| Aphelion | The point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet where it is furthest from the sun. |
| centripetal force | A force that causes an object to move in a circle. |
| solar nebula | A large cloud of gas and dust such as the one that formed our solar system |
| planetesimal | One of the small asteroid-like bodies that formed the building blocks of the planets. |
| nuclear fusion | The process by which hydrogen atoms join together in the sun's core to form helium. |
| sunspot | A dark area of gas on the sun's surface that is cooler than surrounding gases. |
| solar flare | An eruption of gas from the sun's surface that occurs when the loops in sunspot regions suddenly connect. |
| prominence | A huge, reddish loop of gas that protrudes from the sun's surface, linking parts of sunspot regions. |
| terrestrial planet | The name often given to the four inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. |
| astronomical unit | A unit of length equal to the average distance between Earth and the Sun, which is about 150 million kilometers |
| gas giant | A large body in outer space that orbits the sun or another star. The outer planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are examples. |
| planetary ring | A great ring of debris, like the ones surrounding stars. |
| dwarf planet | : A body in space that resembles a small planet but has not cleared debris from its orbital neighbourhood |
| kuiper belt | A cold and dark area, specifically a donut-shaped ring of icy objects, beyond the orbit of Neptune. |
| kuiper belt object | ny of the millions of rocky and icy objects found in the Kuiper belt, such as Pluto. |
| comet | Objects made of frozen gases, rock, and dust that orbit the Sun. |
| oort cloud | A spherical shell of billions of icy planetesimals surrounding the Sun. |
| asteroid | Relatively small, rocky objects that orbit the Sun, mostly found in the asteroid belt. |
| meteoroid | A small chunk of rock in space smaller than a pickup truck. |
| meteor | The streak of light created when a meteoroid enters a planet's atmosphere and burns from friction. |
| meteorite | Meteorite: A piece of rock or metal from a meteoroid that survives its passage through the atmosphere and lands on Earth's surface |
