ATLAS VS AXIS

The special characteristics of the atlas and the axis

Articulates with the occipital condyles of the skull. ATLAS
Has NO body! ATLAS
Contains large superior articulating process, with smooth cartilage surfaces (facets) ATLAS
Permits head to move up and down (yes) ATLAS
Contains body with a prominent tooth-like projection called the "Odontoid Process" AXIS
Odontoid Process projects upward through the ring of the Atlas AXIS
