Data and Statistical Reasoning vocabulary

TermDefinition
box plot A graphical display that shows the distribution of data using five key values; minimum, first quartile(Q1), median, third quartile(Q3), and maximum.
Causation A relationship where one variable directly causes a change in another variable.
Constant A fixed value that does not change.
Correlation A statistical measure of the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables.
Correlation coefficient A numerical value that measures the strength and direction of a linear relationship between two variables.
Correlation coefficient close to 1 or -1 Indicate strong correlations.
Correlation coefficient close to 0 indicate weak correlations.
linear fit A straight line that best represents the trend or pattern in bivariate data.
Mean Absolute Deviation(MAD) A measure of spread that calculates the average distance of all data points from the mean.
Outlier A data point that is significantly different from other values in a data set.
Range The difference between the minimum and maximum values in a data set.
Regression A statistical method used to model the relationship between variables and create a best-fit line through data.
Scatter Plot A graph that displays bivariate data as points on a coordinate plane, with one variable on the x-axis and the other on the y-axis.
Dot Plot A simple graphical display where data values are represented as dots plotted on a number line.
Interquartile Range(IQR) The difference between the third quartile(Q3) and the first quartile(Q1)
Standard deviation A measure of spread that calculates how far, on average, data values deviate from the mean.
Third Quartile(Q3) The median of the upper half of the data and marks the 75th percentile.
First Quartile(Q1) The median of the lower half of the data and marks the 25th percentile.
Second Quartile(Q2) The median of a dataset, the data into two equal halves.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
