Marbury v Madison (1803) Used over Federal appointments, trying to change the original jurisdiction of the court.
McCulloch v Maryland (1819) Can the state tax an entity of the federal government? Does the Fed govt have the right to establish the Bank?
US v Lopez (1995) The Federal government passed a law which restricted guns in a school zone under commerce clause (grants Congress the broad power to regulate trade among the states).
Baker v Carr (1961) Do Legislative districts represent space (land) or numbers of people.
Shaw v Reno (1993) Can a district be gerrymandered primarily based on race? (to ensure representation of a minority).
Engel v Vitale (1962) Public School recited a non denominational prayer. Is the state violating the establishment clause (wall of separation) with this prayer?
Wisconsin v Yoder (1972) Was granting an exception to a law for a sincerely held religious belief permissible? (Amish student not wanting to go to school=no homeschool option )
Tinker v Des Moines ISD (1969) Do students have the right to symbolic speech in school? (Political protest) **One restriction on speech is in a special place (school) it cannot disrupt the function of the place), Question does that armband disrupt.
NY Times vs US (1971) Can the president use extensive privilege to stop the printing of confidential information?
Schenck v US (1919) Private citizens handing out fliers urging citizens to avoid the draft?
Gideon v Wainwright (1963) Does the state have to provide an attorney per the 6th amendment?
Roe v Wade (1973) Does an individual (woman) have the right to privacy (for medical decisions)? In this case to have a first trimester abortion.
McDonald v Chicago (2010) Can the state of Illinois or the city of Chicago band handguns? * 2nd amendment was not yet incorporated.
Brown v Board of Education (1954) Can separate (segregated) schools be equal? Schools under federalism are up to the states. Can the federal government force the states to comply?
Citizens United v FEC (2010) Can a private group who does not coordinate with a campaign spend unlimited money on campaign ads (under 1st amendment protections) 504 groups 501 groups PAC's etc..
