| Totalitarianism | A system where the government controls almost every part of people’s lives (speech, media, jobs, etc.). |
| Appeasement | Giving in to a country’s demands to avoid conflict or war. |
| Axis Powers | The countries that fought together against the Allies in WWII (mainly Germany, Italy, and Japan). |
| Allied Powers | The countries that fought against the Axis Powers (mainly the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union) |
| Pearl Harbor | A surprise attack by Japan on a U.S. naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, which led the U.S. to enter WWII. |
| D Day (Invasion of Normandy) | June 6, 1944, when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, to begin freeing Europe from Nazi control. |
| Battle of Stalingrad | A major battle in Russia where the Soviet Union defeated Germany, turning the war in favor of the Allies. |
| Battle of Midway | A key naval battle where the U.S. defeated Japan, stopping its advance in the Pacific. |
| Tuskegee Airmen | A group of African American pilots who served with distinction in WWII. |
| 442nd Regimental Combat Team | A unit made up mostly of Japanese American soldiers that became one of the most decorated groups in U.S. military history |
| Navajo Code Talkers | Native American soldiers who used their language to send secret messages that enemies couldn’t understand. |
| Rosie the Riveter | A symbol representing women who worked in factories and shipyards during the war. |
| Rationing | Limiting how much people could buy of certain goods so supplies would last during the war. |
| Victory Gardens | Gardens grown by civilians to produce their own food and support the war effort. |
| Internment Camps | Places where Japanese Americans were forced to live during WWII because the government feared they might not be loyal. |
| Holocaust | The mass murder of about 6 million Jews and millions of others by Nazi Germany during WWII. |
| Nuremberg Trials | Trials after WWII where Nazi leaders were judged and punished for war crimes. |
| Atomic Bomb | A powerful weapon that uses nuclear energy to create a massive explosion. |
| Hiroshima & Nagasaki | Two cities in Japan where the U.S. dropped atomic bombs in 1945, leading Japan to surrender |
| Isolationism | A policy of staying out of other countries’ problems and avoiding involvement in wars. |
| Lend-Lease Act | A U.S. law that allowed the country to send weapons and supplies to Allied nations before officially joining the war. |
