material properties flashcards
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the difference between physical and working properties? | Physical - before it is used (appearance and conductivity e.g.) Working - how the materials behaves |
| What is elasticity? | the ability to regain its original shape when bended or folded etc |
| What is ductility | the ability to be stretched without breaking (e.g. copper wire) |
| What is malleability? | The ability to be pressed, spread out or hammered (e.g. lead) |
| What is hardness? | the ability to resist scratching, cutting or wear and tear |
| What is work hardening? | When the properties of a material change due to working (e.g. bending a sheet, stronger at the joint) |
| What is brittleness? | Will snap easily and not bend |
| What is toughness? | resistant to bending and breaking (e.g. cast iron) |
| What is tensile strength? | retains strength when stretched, maximum it can hold |
| What is compressive strength? | retains strength when under pressure (e.g. concrete) |
| What is corrosion resistant? | The ability to not corrode in it's environment (e.g. doesn't rust) |
| What does 'shiny' mean? | when a material reflects light very well (e.g. gold/brass) |
| What is a matt finish? | When a material doesn't reflect light very well and apereas dull |
| What is density? | How solid a material is (denser materials weigh more) |
| What is conductivity? | How well a material conducts heat or electricity |
| What is environmental degradation? | deterioration of materials due to exposure of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, chemical agents, and biological activity. |
| Which of these properties would be suitable for mobile phones? | conductivity, hardness, toughness, corrosive resistance |
| Which of these properties would be suitable for bicycles? | corrosive resistant, hardness, toughness, compressive strength, |
| What are ferrous metals? | metals that contain iron |
| What are non-ferrous metals? | metals that don't contain iron |
| What are examples of ferrous metals? | mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron |
| What are examples of non-ferrous metals? | Brass, copper, aluminium |
| What are thermoplastics? |
