| line (poetic form) | a group of words on one line of a poem |
| stanza (poetic form) | a group of lines arranged together |
| rhyme scheme (poetic form) | a pattern of rhyming words or sounds (usually end rhyme, but not always). Use the letters of the alphabet to represent sounds to be able to visually "see" the pattern. |
| end rhyme (poetic form) | a word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line. |
| internal rhyme (poetic form) | a word inside a line of rhymes with another word on the same line. |
| simile (figurative language) | a comparison of two things using like, as, than or resembles |
| metaphor (figurative language) | a direct comparison of two unlike things |
| imagery (figurative language) | language that appeals to the senses |
| alliteration (figurative language) | consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words |
| narrative (type of poem) | a poem that tells a story |
| lyrical (type of poem) | a short poem in first person POV that expresses an emotion, idea, or describes a scene |
| concrete (type of poem) | a poem in which the words are arranged to create a picture that relates to the content of the poem |
| free verse (type of poem) | no repeating patterns of syllables, no rhyme, conversational, modern |
| couplet (type of poem) | a two line stanza |
| ballad (type of poem) | a song or song like poem that rhymes |
| sonnet (type of poem) | fourteen line poem using any number of formal rhyme schemes |
