QuestionAnswer
what do waves transfer? energy
what is NOT transferred by waves? matter
if the frequency of the vibrating object decreases, how does the wavelength of the resulting wave change? the wavelength will increase
what type of waves do not need a medium to transfer energy? Electromagnetic waves
what is a mechanical wave? a wave that requires a medium to transfer energy
2 types of mechanical waves transverse and longitudinal waves
what type of wave is a sound wave? longitudinal
what type of medium does sound travel fastest in? Light? sound- solids light- vacuum
what are seismic waves? waves that through the earths crests and along the surface of the earth. they are caused by the bending and moving of a tectonic plate. theyre both transverse and longitudinal
is the water from a tsunami the same water that was above the earthquake on the ocean floor? no the energy travels through the water
3 characteristics of a wave you can measure speed wavelength frequency period and amplitude
what is meant by the frequency of a wave? what is the unit? number of waves that pass through a point in a second hertz (hz)
how are period and frequency related? theyre inversely related
of the frequency of a given wave increases what happens to the wavelength? the wavelength decreases
2 types of interferences and how do they work constructive- increases amplitude destructive- decreases amplitude
why does a red apple appear red? all frequencies of white light are absorbed except red which is reflected
how can sound waves be used? ultrasounds and breaking up kidney stones
describe the dif between a sound wave with a large amplitude and one with a small one a sound wave with a larger amplitude will sound louder
how can the speed of a wave be changed? change the medium
explain how the frequency of a wave changes when the wavelength of the wave increases the frequency will decrease
what occurs when a wave passes from one medium to another? refraction- bending absorption- te diffraction- bends around reflection- bounces back
how is an echo produced? reflecting sound waves
why does a tree in a path of sunlight create a shadow instead of light spreading around the tree? the small wavelength of light does not allow for much diffraction
what happens to the energy of a wave that gets absorbed as it moves into a new medium? transferred into thermal energy
when looking at a straw in a glass of water, why does the straw look broken? refraction- the speed of light changes as it enters the water causing the wave to bend

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
