| monarch: A sovereign head of state, especially a king, queen, or emperor | |
| absolute monarchy: a government ruled by a monarch who has unlimited power | |
| constitutional monarchy: a government with a monarch whose power may be only ceremonial or is limited by a constitution | |
| constitution: document that outlines a government’s structure and guarantees rights | |
| parliamentary democracy: democracy where citizens vote for legislators, who then select the prime minister from the legislature | |
| democracy: rule by the people | |
| parliament: the name of the legislative branch in a parliamentary democracy | |
| executive: branch of government that puts laws into action and enforces them | |
| republic: a state where the people elect their leaders by voting | |
| political: refers to governments and power | |
| autocracy: rule by one person | |
| oligarchy: rule by a few people or a group | |
| communism: a political system in which all power and property is controlled by the government, which is run by the Communist Party alone | |
| indirect election: the leader is chosen by representatives in the legislature who are elected by the citizens | |
| direct election: the leader is chosen by the citizens themselves in an election civil rights/personal | |
| freedoms: the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. | |
| citizen participation: a process which provides private individuals an opportunity to influence public decisions and has long been a component of the democratic decision-making process. Most common way to participate is voting. | |
