Road symbols and signals definitions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Red light | Come to a complete stop at the intersection. Even if you are turning right afterward |
| Yellow light | Slow down and attempt to stop completely by the time the light turns red |
| Green light | Continue driving at the same speed through the light but watch for turning cars and pedestrians |
| Stop sign | Come to a full stop at the stop sign. Then, look in all directions and proceed when it is safe and clear |
| Yield sign | You must let cars already on the road go first. |
| Railroad crossing | a railroad crossing is ahead so be prepared to potentially stop. |
| One-way sign | Where the sign is posted, traffic goes in only one direction: no two-way traffic is allowed |
| speed limit signs | They indicate the maximum safe speed limit under ideal conditions. |
| Blue signs | These signs provide information about upcoming gas stations, hotels, restaurants and rest areas |
| Brown signs | These signs provide information about upcoming parks and recreation services |
| Orange signs (diamond) | Alert you on upcoming construction |
| green horizontal sign | These signs provide information about on upcoming routes, highway exits, and miles to upcoming cities and towns |
| Diamond shaped signs (yellow) | Be prepared for nearby driving obstacles (divided highway, sharp curve, etc.) |
| Pentagon shaped sign | Take caution because there is a school or pedestrian crossing nearby |
| Shield shaped signs | These signs let you know you are driving on a US route |
| Blue sign marked with an ''H'' | you are approaching an exit or route to a hospital |
| Yellow lines on the road | These lines dictate when you can or cannot pass other cars when driving |
| Solid yellow line: | On a two-way road, a solid line means no passing in permitted. Do not cross this line. |
| Dotted/Broken yellow or white line | On a two-way road, a broken yellow or white line means you can cross this line to pass cars when it is safe to do so |
| Lane markings | an ''x'' above a traffic lane on a muti-lane road means that lane is closed to traffic. |
| Red painted curb | This means you cannot stop, stand, or park along this curb |
| Blue parking space | This parking space is reserved for drivers with disabilities who have an appropriate place card |
