| paleontologist | A scientist who studies prehistoric life, ranging from dinosaurs and ancient mammals to microscopic organisms and ancient plants. |
| species | The most basic, fundamental unit of biological classification |
| body structure | A highly structured, hierarchical system ranging from the microscopic level to complex, interacting organ systems |
| shared structure | homologous structures: physical, anatomical, or genetic features in different species that share a common evolutionary origin, even if they serve completely different functions today |
| evolution | the process by which populations of organisms change over successive generations through the inheritance of genetic traits |
| descendant species | an organism that has evolved from a preceding ancestral species |
| common ancestor population | a group of organisms from which multiple distinct species or lineages later evolve |
| stability | the capacity of a system, structure, or object to resist change, maintain balance, and recover its equilibrium after being disturbed |
| speciation | the evolutionary process by which a single population splits into two or more distinct, independently evolving lineages that can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring |
| related | describes things or people connected by a logical, causal, or familial bond |
