Evolution history

paleontologist A scientist who studies prehistoric life, ranging from dinosaurs and ancient mammals to microscopic organisms and ancient plants.
species The most basic, fundamental unit of biological classification
body structure A highly structured, hierarchical system ranging from the microscopic level to complex, interacting organ systems
shared structure homologous structures: physical, anatomical, or genetic features in different species that share a common evolutionary origin, even if they serve completely different functions today
evolution the process by which populations of organisms change over successive generations through the inheritance of genetic traits
descendant species an organism that has evolved from a preceding ancestral species
common ancestor population a group of organisms from which multiple distinct species or lineages later evolve
stability the capacity of a system, structure, or object to resist change, maintain balance, and recover its equilibrium after being disturbed
speciation the evolutionary process by which a single population splits into two or more distinct, independently evolving lineages that can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring
related describes things or people connected by a logical, causal, or familial bond
