what is the charge of beta radiation? -1
what is the penetration power of alpha radiation? stopped by few cm of air, won’t go through skin
what’s the penetration power of beta radiation? stopped by few mm of aluminium, skin will mainly stop it
what’s the penetration power of gamma radiation? reduced by several cm of lead, or several meters of concrete
what’s the order for ionising effect, from strongest to weakest? alpha, beta, gamma
what’s the danger of high ionisation in the body? change DNA, high damage can kill cells, lower damage causes cancer
what piece of equipment is used to detect radiation? geiger counter
what are some background sources of radiation? radon gas medical procedures cosmic rays food and drink
what happens in alpha radiation equations? number of protons go down by 2, mass number goes down by 4 atom becomes different element, two places below in periodic table
what happens in beta radiation equations? number of protons go down by 1
how do we dispose of low level radiation waste? bagged, put in landfill
how do we dispose of medium level radiation waste? landfill if short lived, or disposed with high level
how do we dispose of high level radiation waste? buried underground in geologically secure site
why do radioactive isotopes release radiation? imbalance between protons and neutrons
is alpha radiation a helium nucleus or a high energy electron? helium nucleus
is beta radiation a helium nucleus or a high energy electron? high energy electron
