Newton's Laws

QuestionAnswer
What is a Force? push or pull
What is the unit of measurement for force? Newtons(N)
What is weight? the measure on how much gravity pulls down an object
Is mass a force? No, not a force
Is weight a force? Yes
What is the jobs of forces? to change direction and speed of objects
What is a net force? the total amount of forces acting on an object (if the forces aren't equal then is motion)
Newton's 1st Law of MOTION Objects at rest tend to stay at rest until a force acts on it. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion in a straight line until a force acts on it
Law of Inertia Same as Newton's 1st Law of motion
What is Inertia? How stubborn something is; the want to stay doing what it's doing
What is the relationship with Inertia and Mass The more mass, the more inertia
Newton's 2nd Law of MOTION It describes how an object moves due to an unbalanced force
What is the formula for newton's 2nd law of motion? Force equals mass times acceleration (F = m x a)
What is the unit of measurement for mass? grams
what is the unit of measurement for acceleration? meters per second squared (m/s^2)
What is Newton's 3rd Law of MOTION for every action force there is an opposite and equal reaction force.
What is Gravity? gravity is a pull force
What is mass how much matter (stuff) is in something
What tool is used to measure mass a balance
What tool is used to measure weight a scale
can mass change from place to place no
can weight change from place to place yes
What is Newton's Law of Gravity Everything has gravity therefore everything is pulling on everything else
If there were more mass there would be (more/ less) gravity more
If there were more distance there would be (more/ less) gravity less
Mass is ____ to gravity directly proportional
If the mass is doubled (2x) the gravity would be... quadrupled (4x)
Distance is _______ to gravity inversely proportional
if the distance doubles (2x) the gravity would be..... one-fourth of the distance (1/4)
Why does the pen NOT go to you when you drop it? earth's Gravity over rules our gravity
Why are we not pulled off the Earth by the Sun's gravity it is too far away so the earth's Gravity wins
how far away is the Sun from Earth 93 million miles (93,000,000)
What is the order of the planets fastest to slowest Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are the inner (terrestrial) planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
What are the inner planets' characteristics rocks, small, no rings, close together
What are the outer planets? Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are the outer planets' characteristics rings, giant, gassy, moons, far apart.
How do orbits work The inertia of the planet/moon has to be equal to the gravity of the sun/planets in order to have orbit (it is a constant battle)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
