Pedigrees

TermDefinition
pedigree A diagram that shows how a trait is passed from parents to offspring over generations in a family.
square (in pedigree) Represents a male.
circle (in pedigree) Represents a female.
shaded symbol A person who shows the trait being studied.
unshaded symbol A person who does not show the trait.
individual number A number assigned to each person within a generation for identification; restarts with each generation.
generation number A level that represents a group of individuals born around the same time, shown using Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.) to indicate different generations.
horizontal line A line that connects a male and female in a pedigree, showing that they are partners and can have children together.
vertical line A line that connects parents to their offspring, showing how traits are passed from one generation to the next.
