Ambu A self refilling bag-valve mask unit used for artificial respiration that is effective for ventilating and oxygenating intubated patients.
Basic Life Support A number of emergency procedures needed to ensure a person’s immediate survival.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation The application of manual chest compressions and ventilations (also called breathing) to patients who are not breathing or do not have a pulse, called rescue.
Code A term used in healthcare settings to indicate emergency a part of basic life support.
Endotracheal tube A catheter that is inserted into the trachea through the mouth, provides a patent airway
Intraosseous Within bone, route for delivery of fluids and medications through a needle inserted into the marrow of certain bones
Nasopharyngeal airway tube A soft, flexible tube that is inserted into the nose and provides a patent airway, also, also known as a nasal trumpet.

Rescue breathing Life saving maneuver to resuscitate a person who has stopped breathing. The rescuer forces air into the victim’s lungs at intervels by exhaling into victim’s mouth, nose, or stoma from a laryngectomy.
Retractions The sucking in of tissues between the intercostal spaces and neck due to respiratory distress, classic sign severe asthma.
Standard of care The level and type of care an ordinary, prudent healthcare professional with the same training and experience in a similar practice would have provided under a similar situation.
Triage To sort out and classify the injured, used in the military and emergency setting to determine the priority of a patient to be treated.
Triaging flow map A written flow map to make triage decisions, based on answers to questions, the person moves through the map until a triage decision is made.
Vasoconstriction Contraction of the muscles, causing narrowing of the inside tube of the vessel
What are some common emergencies? Allergic reactions, Accident health issues that result into an emergency
Medication that increases the stimulation of the heart muscle and is considered as a vasoconstrictor and bronchial relaxant. This medication is also used for Ephinephrine

What is a first-degree burn? Damage to the epidermis
What is a second degree burn? Damage to the epidermis & dermis
What is a Third-degree burn? Damage to the epidermis, dermis & subcutaneous tissue
What is a fourth degree burn? Damage beyond the subcutaneous tissue into the muscle & bones
What are the first aid procedures for a person who has heat exhaustion? Move person to a shady or air-conditioned area, drink cool sports bev, cool shower
What are the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion? Sweating, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, cool moist skin, fast weak pulse, tiredness, shallow
What are the risk factors for heat related conditions? Age, dehydration, heart disease, poor blood circulation, fever/sunburn , mental illness, alcohol/ drug use
What are some screening questions to ask a patient who has cold related conditions? What is the person’s medical history, what symptoms does the person have? What color is the exposed skin? Types of questions to ask
What are the first aid procedures for a major burn? Seek immediate medical attention ( call 911) do not remove burned clothing stuck to skin monitor breathing
What is the rule of nine? Providers estimate the percent of total burn surface area ( %TBSA)
What be some screening questions you would ask a patient if they called in and stated that they had been bit by a spider? What bit you? Do you have any allergies? How does the wound look? Describe the wound to me Is there any swelling in the mouth or lip?
What is done in the ambulatory care center with a patient who is having anaphylaxis? Call, give epinephrine, keep individual calm. In case of sting scrape stinger off, monitor airway
What are the signs and symptoms of poisonings? Blue-ish lip, cough, difficulty breathing heart palpitation, chest pain, nausea/vommiting numbness, dizziness, usual also ordor

What should you do when a foreign body is in the eye? The eye should be flushed with clean warm water or saline eyedrops
What causes diabetic ketoaciosis? An imbalance of glucose and insalin
What is given to adult patients for hypoglycemia? Glucagon
What is usually ordered by the providedif they think the patient is having an MI? Calling EKG
What are the first aid measures for shock? Monitor the airway, breathing and pulse , 911 immediately, check the person for responsiveness, perform rescue breathing and cpr.

What are the first aid procedures a medical assistant should preform for a patient that is having a seizure? Move to the floor, protect the patient’s mouth, do not place anything in the patient’s mouth
What is an ischemic stroke? Occurs when the arterial blood flow to part of the brain is blocked. The brain cells start to die after a few minutes
What are the signs of partial airway obstruction ? Can still speak, forceful or weak coughing, labored, noisy or gasping breathing, panicked appearance; extreme anxiety, or agitation?
