QuestionAnswer
Weathering The process if breaking down rocks, which creates sediments. More weathering = rounder shape
Chemical Weathering Changes in the chemical composition of a rock
Physical Weathering When rocks are broken apart without chemical change, usually caused by wind, water, ice, gravity, and plants
What happens when there is more surface area exposed? The more surface area exposed, the faster the weathering
What happens when the mineral composition is softer? The softer the mineral, the faster it will weather
How does Climate affect chemical reactions? Moisture and heat help chemical reactions occur faster. Chemical weathering is more intense in warm moist climates.
Humid Climates with lots of moisture
Arid Lack of moisture
Sediments Broken down pieces of rock
Erosion Transportation or movements of sediment
What does erosion do? Shapes the Earth's surface
Deposition Dropping or laying down sediment
How does deposition usually happen? When velocity slows or stops
What is the difference between Erosion and Deposition? Erosion removes rock or soil from one place and deposition drops and builds up that material in a new location
Features of well sorted sediment -all sediments the same size - all pebbles or all sand -deposited by water and wind
River A natural stream of fresh water flowing through a channel or riverbed Flows into a larger body of water The speed of water depends on how steep the riverbed is
Watershed The boundary defining an area of land that drains water into a specific body of water.
Drainage Basin An area of land with a watershed Watershed= Drainage Basin
Head waters Source of a river/ Where the river begins
Mouth End of the river
Discharge Volume of water flowing through a river channel
River load Sediment eroded/carried by the river
Tributary A smaller stream that flows into a larger stream
Meander The bend in the stream
Does the water move faster on the inside or outside of the Meander? Outside
Deposition and Erosion on a Meander Erosion happens on the outside of the bend where water flows faster Deposition happens on the inside of the bend where water slows down
Point Bar A depositional feature on the inside of a Meander

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
