Prefixes and Suffixes

TermDefinition
un used to reverse the meaning of a word or indicate the opposite state of something
re indicates that an action is being repeated or that something is moving back to a previous place
dis signals a lack of something, a separation, or doing the direct opposite of a specific action
in-/im a directional prefix meaning to move inside, toward, or within something else
in-/im a negative prefix used to show that something is not possible or lacks a certain quality
pre describes something that happens earlier in time or is positioned in front of something else
sub used to describe something that is underneath, below the surface, or lower in rank
mis indicates that an action was done incorrectly, poorly, or in a way that was morally wrong
non a simple negative prefix that means "not" or "without" (usually used for neutral facts)
over suggests that an action was done to an excessive degree or is physically located above
-s/-es grammatical ending used to turn a singular noun into a plural (more than one)
-ed a suffix added to verbs to show that the action already happened in the past
-ing added to a verb to show that the action is currently in progress or continuous
-ly tells how or in what way something is being done
-er/-or a person or object that performs a specific job or action
-ion/-tion/-sion/-ation the act or state of doing something (turns verbs into nouns
-able/-ible means that something is capable of being done or is worthy
-al/-ial having the characteristics of or relating to a certain topic
y describes something as being full of or like a certain quality
ness the state or condition of being a certain way
