End of Year Review

Vocab Review for RISE

QuestionAnswer
solar eclipse The Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, covering all or part of the Sun
seasons the four main divisions of the year (spring, summer, autumn, winter) caused by Earth's tilt on its axis and its orbit around the sun, resulting in predictable weather, climate, and daylight changes
gravity A force of attraction between masses.
inertia Resistance to a change in motion.
system a group of items that interact to form a unified whole, often designed to achieve a specific purpose or function
atom The smallest building block of matter.
molecule Two or more atoms bonded together.
density the mass of a substance per unit volume representing how tightly matter is packed together
heat a form of energy that transfers between substances
energy the capacity to do work or produce change, serving as the force behind all action, from molecular motion to cosmic events
states of matter solid, liquid, gas
condensation the phase change where water vapor (gas) cools and turns into liquid water
energy transfer the process of moving energy from one system, object, or location to another, or changing it from one form to another
conductor a material that easily allows heat to flow through
insulator a material or device that resists or prevents the flow of heat transfer
hurricane a rotating, low-pressure weather system—that forms over the ocean with surface winds of at least 74 mph caused by the Coriollis Effect
tornado a narrow, violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground
pressure the amount of physical force pushing on a specific surface area that pushes particles closer together
weather the state of the atmosphere at a particular place and time including temperature, air pressure, humidity, wind and clouds
climate the long-term (usually 30 years) prevailing pattern of weather at a given location
wind the movement of air usually caused by differences in pressure and temperature
greenhouse effect the gases in Earth's atmosphere, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane, trap heat radiated from the surface, acting like a blanket to keep the planet warm enough to sustain life
competition animals that eat or use the same resources in an ecosystem.
predation the preying of one animal on another
mutualism the species involved all benefit from their interactions
producer organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis
consumer organisms that eat other organisms to get energy
ecosystem services the direct and indirect benefits, resources, and processes that healthy natural environments provide to support human survival, well-being, and quality of life
decomposer organisms that break down and recycle organic matter to basic particles for use by organisms in the ecosystem
population all the individuals of one kind in a specified area at one time
community all the interacting populations in a specified area
abiotic non-living things in an ecosystem
ecosystem a system of interacting organisms and non-living factors in a specified area
organisms living things
stability the capacity of an ecosystem to maintain its structure, function, and biodiversity over time, even when subjected to environmental stress or disturbances
trophic levels an organism's specific position in a food chain or web, determined by its feeding relationship
invasive species a non-native organism (plant, animal, fungus, or bacteria) introduced to an environment that causes harm
lunar eclipse The Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon
ecosystem a system of interacting organisms and non-living factors in a specified area

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
