Describe Macbeth as a character. Brave & decent man corrupted by a fatal flaw: ambition and lust for power
How is Act 3, Scene 4 so significant for Macbeth? He becomes paranoid, arrogant and violent, becomes a tyrant
QUOTE 1 (MACBETH) - Act 1 (Beginning) "Why do you dress me in borrowed robes?" (Scene 3)
CONTEXT - SUGGESTS - ZOOM IN -Macbeth's response to being addressed as Thane of Cawdor. - Suggests lack of personal ambition -"Borrowed", feels he has not earned the title and doesn't wish to take it from another man
QUOTE 2 (MACBETH) - Act 3 (Middle) "Full of scorpions is my mind dear wife" (Scene 2)
ZOOM 1 (2 Interpretations) - ZOOM 2 "Scorpions" - Suggests he's tortured by his deeds OR feels himself becoming more poisonous. His thoughts are toxic and dangerous "Dear wife" - Shows he values and needs her reassurance and advice, unusual
QUOTE 3 (MACBETH) - Act 5 (End) "Before my body, I throw my warlike shield" (Scene 8)
CONTEXT (3) -Realises the deceit of witches -Reverts back to character at start -Regains some nobility and sympathy with bravery
What is the message of Macbeth's character? He is a warning to the audience about following your ambition or trusting the supernatural, he's ultimately punished and killed
Describe Lady Macbeth as a character - Unusual female character for Jacobean literature. Assertive, dominant and manipulating. -Becomes increasingly marginalised as Macbeth grows in confidence, succumbs to guilt and commits suicide
QUOTE 1 ( LADY MACBETH) - Act 1 (Beginning) "Unsex me here" (Scene 5)
CONTEXT - ZOOM IN -She is calling on the spirits, which echoes the behaviour of the witches, she's inviting evil and becomes unlikeable -"Unsex" - Imperative verb, she wishes to lose her femininity and is frustrated of the limits of her gender so she can commit murder
QUOTE 2 (LADY MACBETH ) - ACT 1 (Beginning) "Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under't" (Scene 5)
ZOOM "Serpent" is a biblical allusion representing evil, betrayal and temptation, alludes to Eve
QUOTE 3 (LADY MACBETH) - ACT 1 (Beginning) "When you durst do it, then you were a man" (Scene 7)
CONTEXT - ZOOM -She is suggesting he is a coward for not wishing to commit regicide. -"Then you were a man" - emasculates him and therefore manipulates him
QUOTE 4 (LADY MACBETH) - ACT 5 (End) "All the perfumes of Arabia could not sweeten this little hand" (Scene 1)
CONTEXT - ZOOM - ZOOM Mad & hallucinating blood on her hands, blood symbolising guilt. -"Perfumes" suggests she can smell the guilt on herself -"Little" suggests she is trying to appear more childlike to gain sympathy
What is the message of Lady Macbeth? To teach the women to be innocent and teach men to not allow their wives to command them, her madness and death is a warning sign
Describe Macduff as a character. Nobleman in court for Duncan and the opposite of Macbeth. Stays committed to Duncan throughout and is a brave warrior, kills Macbeth at the end to avenge his family and resets natural order
QUOTE 1 (MACDUFF) - ACT 4 "Bleed, bleed, poor country!" (Scene 3)
CONTEXT - ZOOM Shows his fierce patriotism and love for Scotland -Personifies "bleed" and loves it to the extent he views it like a person, repetition emphasises his feelings, exclamation mark shows horror and grief
QUOTE 2 (MACDUFF) - ACT 4 "I must also feel it like a man" (Scene 3)
CONTEXT METHOD Response to finding out his family was murdered and told to bear it "like a man". -Antithesis of Macbeth and believes emotions are part of being a man and it's not a weakness to show them
