My last Duchess

What does that’s my last touches painted on the wall looking as if she were alive? Mean? The Duke establishes a sense of control from the start by using the possessive pronoun my. Symbolises even after death he still owns her. Sinister ton, use the subject of his dead wife as a piece of art rather than sentimentally his wifepossession to him.
What does fra pandolf mean Duke is emphasising and boasting about his wealth, with reference and illusion to the famous artist that painted for him to demonstrate his influence and wealth.
What does that spot of joy mean? Refers to the Duches blushing. He’s very irritated by this action. He also objective her as a woman and shows he feels she’s possession. Unreasonable and has complete domination over her life. Also presents him as paranoid.
What does the bough of cherries of some officious fool Show with his materialism. Doesn’t value natural pleasures of the earth, once his status unwell to be more important. Sees highlighting other things as a criticism of himself.
What does this present him as? Presented as insecure. Expect her to preserve joy and smiles for him alone or his pride is hurt. Reliance on controlling women to make himself feel powerful and desirable. Sense of underlying vulnerability.
What does I gave command, then all smiles stopped altogether mean Euphemism for Hamada. Cynical McCabe and sinister way to end their life. Shows power can kill with no consequence, but also shows an overreaction murder is a sign of lack of control.
What does notice Neptune mean? Metaphor suggest his views himself as God like men are gods that must tame their wives, shows excessive breath and pride of Duke. Materialistic.Belief status and when should be seen as more important than anything available to a common man.
What does for me signify? Cyclical structure, returns to name dropping leaves an impression that the Duke feels everything must be for him alone and desires feeling of exclusive ownership.
What is the context? Browning was a British poet may spent many years in Italy heavily influenced by Shirley. Based on a story he heard in Italy/Duke of Ferrara. Alfonso was a angelic and possessive Duke who was said to have killed his wife.
