What is management? To process of guiding the development, maintenance, and allocation of resources to achieve organizational goals
What are the 4 functions of management? Planning, organizing, leading, controlling
What is planning? Deciding what needs to be done, how to do it, and who will do it
What is organizing? Coordinating and allocating resources to carry out plans
What is leading? Guiding and motivating people to achieve goals
What is controlling? Monitoring performance and making corrections to meet goals
What is efficiency? Using the least amount of resources "doing things right"
What is effectiveness? Achieving the desired result "doing the right things"
What is strategic planning? Long-term (1-5 years) goals for the whole organization
What is tactical planning? Short-term plans (1year) to support strategy
What is operational planning? Day to day tasks and procedures
What is contingency planning? Backup plans for unexpected situations
What is leadership? The ability to guide and influence others
What is the difference between a manager and a leader? Managers focus on tasks/processes, leaders on people and motivation
Reward Power Comes from giving rewards
Legitimate Power Comes from positions
Laissez-faire leadership Leader gives full control to employees
What is situational leadership? Adjusting leadership style based on the situation
Participative leadership Leader includes team in decisions
Autocratic leadership Leader makes decisions alone
Coercive power Comes from punishment/threads
Expert power Comes from knowledge
Referent power Comes from respect/chairsman
What is an organizational structure? How tasks and people are arranged in a business
Functional Structure Organized by job functions (marketing, finance, etc)
Product Structure Organized by customer type
Geographic Structure Employees report to Two managers
Top Management Big decisions (CEO, executives)
Middle management Connects top and lower levels
Supervisory management Overseas daily work
What is span of control? Number of employees a manager supervises
Centralization Decisions made at the top
Decentralization Decisions pushed to lower levels
What is values and behaviors in a company? Shared values and behaviors in a company
