Gas laws
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| • Boyle’s Law | – The volume of gas is inversely proportional to the pressure of a gas if one goes up the other goes down. – The more pressure, the less volume. – The less pressure, the more volume. Every 33 feet underwater adds another atmosphere. |
| • Henry’s Law | – The amount of a dissolved gas in a given amount of fluid is directly proportional to the amount of pressure on top of that gas. When diving, increasing water pressure forces the nitrogen in the air (which makes up 78% of what we breathe) into your blood |
| • Charles's Law: | – At a constant temperature, the volume of a gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas. – If the temperature increases, the volume increases. – If the temperature decreases, then the volume will decrease. |
| • Gay-Lussac’s Law | – As you heat a volume of gas, the pressure is going to go up. – If you cool a volume of gas, the pressure will decrease. |
| • Dalton’s Law: | – The total pressure of a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressure of the individual gases. |
| A.C. (Assist and Control Ventilation). | The patient's respiratory rate and tidal volume is set and delivered by the vent – If the patient attempts to take a spontaneous breath, the vent will recognize it, and will assist the patient in delivering a breath with the preset tidal volume. |
| S.I.M.V. (Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation | If the patient attempts to take a spontaneous breath, the ventilator will not force a set volume to be delivered with that breath and will adjust the pattern of set breaths around the spontaneous breaths. |
| C.M.V. (Controlled Mechanical Ventilation). | The patient's respiratory rate and tidal volume of each breath is set and delivered by the vent – Any attempt by the patient to take a spontaneous breath will be blocked |
| C.P.A.P. (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) | Positive pressure is added throughout the entire respiratory cycle – Patient must have their own respiratory drive. – CPAP can be used alone or “Weaning mode” allows all the patient’s breaths to be spontaneous, and is used to help end a patient’s need to |
| • Types of Positive Pressure Mechanical Ventilators: | – Time cycled – Volume cycled – Pressure cycled -- Transport Ventilators |
| Time Cycled: | – Ventilator is controlled by the preset rate (bpm) – Delivers a preset tidal volume to the patient. |
| • Volume Cycled: | – Air is pushed into the lungs until a preset tidal volume has been delivered. You can change 500ml 300ml 100ml |
