Criminal Law

What Do You Know

What Is criminal Law? Laws that define crimes and punishments enforced by the government
What is the difference between criminal law and civil law? Criminal law involves offenses against the state; civil law deals with disputes between individuals.
What is actus reus? The physical act of committing a crime.
What is mens rea? The mental intent or state of mind when committing a crime.
What are the two main elements needed to prove a crime? Actus reus + mens rea
What is a felony? A serious crime punishable by more than one year in prison.
What is a misdemeanor? A less serious crime punishable by less than one year in jail.
What is an infraction? A minor violation usually punished by a fine (like a traffic ticket).
