arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart
veins carry blood BACK TO the heart
diaphragm divides upper and lower arteries/veins
common carotid supplies the head and neck
internal carotid supplies blood to brain
external carotid supplies blood to face
subclavian supplies blood to the neck
brachial artery supplies blood to the upper arm
radial artery supplies blood to lower arm
innominate artery indirectly supplies blood to the right side of the head, neck, and upper limbs
brachiocephalic artery another term for innominate artery
abdominal aorta supplies abdomen, pelvis, and lower limbs through branches
femoral artery supplies blood to the upper leg
common iliac artery supplies blood to the pelvis and lower limbs
popliteal artery supplies blood to the knee and leg
dorsalis pedis supplies blood to the ankle and top of the foot
subclavian vein drains deoxygenated blood from upper limbs, head, neck and parts of thoracic wall and returns it to the heart
brachial vein drains blood from muscles and deep structures of the upper arm and carry it to form the axillary vein
radial vein drains blood from the lower arm and hands
axillary vein drains blood from the upper limbs, axillaries (armpits), and lateral thoracic wall delivering it into the subclavian vein
innominate vein drains the head, neck, upper limbs, upper thorax into the superior vena cava also called brachiocephalic vein
jugular vein drains blood from the face, brain, and neck and return it to the heart through the superior vena cava
greater saphenous vein drains superficial tissues of the foot, leg, and thigh and empties into the femoral vein
lesser saphenous vein drains lateral foot, lateral ankle, and posterior lower leg, empties into the popliteal vein
common iliac vein drains blood from the pelvis and lower limbs delivering it to the heart through the inferior vena cava
anterior tibial vein drains blood from the top of the foot, ankle joint, and front of the lower leg
hepatic portal system routes blood from stomach, intestines, spleen, pancreas, and gallbladder to the liver
lymph a clear fluid that carries waste, excess fluid, and immune cells through the lymphatic system before returning it to the bloodstream
lymph vessels thin tubes that carry lymph from the tissues back into the bloodstream, composed mostly of lymphocytes and monocytes
lymph glands lymphatic tissues that produce lymphocytes, located along lymphatic vessels. Commonly called "lymph nodes"
lymph organs organs of the lymphatic system that produce, mature, or activate lymphocytes and help defend the body against infection
Peyer's patches patches of tissue in the intestines
lymphoid tissue tissue that contains lymphocytes and supports immune defense
bone marrow responsible for the production of red and white blood cells. tissue in the center of many bones
thymus gland responsible for production of T lymphocytes
T lymphocytes a variety of further differentiated lymphocytes that are activated against certain types of pathogens
spleen responsible for breaking down red blood cells, storing blood, and producing lymphocytes and plasma cells
right lymphatic duct empties lymph from the right side of the upper body into the right subclavian vein, which drains into the superior vena cava
thoracic duct empties lymph from left side and lower half of the body into the inferior vena cava
cisterna chyli dilated sac in the lumbar area of the spine that is the origin of the thoracic duct. Major site of drainage from the intestines
