| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Peripheral nervous system | a network of nerves and supporting cells that carries signals into and out of the the central nervous system |
| central nervous system | a system that includes the brain and spinal cord; processes information and creates a response that it delivers to the body |
| cell body | the largest part of a typical neuron; contains the nucleus and much of the cytoplasm |
| axon | a long fiber that carrries impulses away from the cell body of a neuron |
| Resting potential | an electrical charge across the membrane of a resting neuron |
| action potential | a reversal of charges across the cell membrane of a neuron; also called the nerve impulse |
| threshold | the minimum level of a stimulus that is required to cause an impulse |
| synapse | the point at which a neuron can transfer an impulse to another cell |
| Cerebrum | the part of the brain responsible for voluntary activities of the body; the “thinking” region of the brain |
| hypothalamus | the portion of the brain that acts as a control center for recongnition and analysis of hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger, and body tempature |
| Cerebellum | the part of the brain that coordinates continent and controls balance |
| brain stem | a structure that connects the brain and spinal cord |
| dopamine | a neurons transmitter that is associated with the brain’s pleasure and reward centers |
| Somatic nervous system | the part of the peripheral nervous system that carrries signals to and from skeletal muscles |
| reflex arc | the sensory receptor, sensory neuron, motor neuron, and effector that are involved in a quick response to a stimulus |
| autonomic nervous system | The par of the peripheral nervous system that regulates activity’s that are involuntary, or not under concepts control; made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic subdivisions |
| Cochlea | the fluid part of the inner ear; contains nerve cells that detect sound |
| Semicircular canal | one of three structures in the inner ear that occupies the position of the body in relation to gravity |
| cornea | a tough transparent layer of the eye though which light enters |
