TermDefinition
Peripheral nervous system a network of nerves and supporting cells that carries signals into and out of the the central nervous system
central nervous system a system that includes the brain and spinal cord; processes information and creates a response that it delivers to the body
cell body the largest part of a typical neuron; contains the nucleus and much of the cytoplasm
axon a long fiber that carrries impulses away from the cell body of a neuron
Resting potential an electrical charge across the membrane of a resting neuron
action potential a reversal of charges across the cell membrane of a neuron; also called the nerve impulse
threshold the minimum level of a stimulus that is required to cause an impulse
synapse the point at which a neuron can transfer an impulse to another cell
Cerebrum the part of the brain responsible for voluntary activities of the body; the “thinking” region of the brain
hypothalamus the portion of the brain that acts as a control center for recongnition and analysis of hunger, thirst, fatigue, anger, and body tempature
Cerebellum the part of the brain that coordinates continent and controls balance
brain stem a structure that connects the brain and spinal cord
dopamine a neurons transmitter that is associated with the brain’s pleasure and reward centers
Somatic nervous system the part of the peripheral nervous system that carrries signals to and from skeletal muscles
reflex arc the sensory receptor, sensory neuron, motor neuron, and effector that are involved in a quick response to a stimulus
autonomic nervous system The par of the peripheral nervous system that regulates activity’s that are involuntary, or not under concepts control; made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic subdivisions
Cochlea the fluid part of the inner ear; contains nerve cells that detect sound
Semicircular canal one of three structures in the inner ear that occupies the position of the body in relation to gravity
cornea a tough transparent layer of the eye though which light enters
